Rosa Y. Kim, M.D.

James C Major, Jr MD PhD

Dr. Major grew up in Coral Gables, Florida where his father practiced ophthalmology. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Emory University and Masters and Ph.D. in Biology at The University of Texas at Austin. While in Austin, Dr. Major’s main research focus was the population genetics and biology of birds. He then served as an Assistant Professor at UT and was awarded the University’s highest honor for teaching. Thereafter, he received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine where he also served on the faculty for two years. Dr. Major completed his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, the top rated ophthalmology department and residency program in the nation. Following fellowship, Dr. Major served on the Bascom Palmer faculty as Chief Resident and Co-Director of Ocular Trauma. He has published over fifteen scientific papers, book chapters, and national meeting abstracts on vitreoretinal surgery, diabetic retinopathy, endophthalmitis, raptor retina imaging, and ocular trauma. He is fluent in Spanish and enjoys football, the outdoors, and history.
